San Mateo County CUPA
The Hazardous Materials Program is part of the Environmental Health Division within San Mateo County's Health Services Agency. The HMP is the Certified Unified Program Agency (CUPA) for all areas of San Mateo County. The Hazardous Materials Program provides comprehensive environmental regulatory compliance inspection services to protect human health and the environment. Additionally, program personnel perform plan reviews and inspections associated with the construction, upgrading, and closure of hazardous materials storage facilities and equipment.
Under authority granted by the state, the county's Hazardous Materials Program administers the following programs:
- Hazardous Waste Generator Program (California Health and Safety Code Chapter 6.5)
- Hazardous Waste Tiered Permitting (California Health and Safety Code Chapter 6.5)
- Underground Storage Tanks (California Health and Safety Code Chapter 6.7)
- Aboveground Storage Tanks (California Health and Safety Code Chapter 6.67)
- Hazardous Materials Business Plans (California Health and Safety Code Chapter 6.95)
- California Accidental Release Prevention Program (California Health and Safety Code Chapter 6.95)
